Inside Nelson Mandela's Home at Victor Verster Prison South Africa

Two years ago, while visiting South Africa, I was very lucky to tour the inside of this famous house located inside the Drakenstein Correctional Centre (formerly known as Victor Verster Prison) a low-security prison between Paarl and Franschhoek in the valley of the Dwars River in the Western Cape of South Africa, east of Cape Town.

On Wednesday, December 7th 1988 Nelson Mandela was moved to the Victor Vester Prison where he lived in this private house for 14 months.

He was released on February 11, 1990.
Every room of the house, and the garden, was bugged by the authorities.

This house has been declared a South African National Heritage Site and since it resides inside a working prison, not many people have the opportunity to see the inside.

Mandela's inspirational view was The Sleeping Giant (the Simonsberg) Can you see the figure of a man lying on his back, from the left, his head, to his arms folded on his stomach, then feet.

Cuba in 16 Instagram photos

"You went to Cuba? I'm so jealous!"

Almost every American I've spoken to since our visit to Cuba has responded in the same way: with envy. Soon, though, it's going to be much easier for US citizens to visit this Caribbean nation, with the lifting of the decades-old embargo.

We visited late last year with a couple of friends, and explored Havana and the eastern half of the island. We stayed in casas particulares and travelled in huge old American cars. We ate at hole-in-the-wall locals' food stalls, drank rum and smoked cigars.

It was an experience like no other in a country that's like no other: stopped in time in some respects, inching into the future in others. We found it frustrating, invigorating, interesting and welcoming, and we're sure you'll have a great time there when you travel to Cuba.

In the meantime, enjoy these Cuba Instagram photos. While you check them out, take a listen to our Cuba podcast: hit play below or find episode 312 in iTunes, Stitcher or Soundcloud:

Havana

Classic cars are an important part of Havana. Internet is not, hence my recent silence here!
